Build your own 19'' rack & Stand
I decided that 19'' rack gear is expensive enough, the rack to actually put it in means spending a whole lot more. I needed thing to hold all my rack gear, my mixer, keyboard, other odds and ends. Also I needed a place to put my Power amp, CD player and tape deck which are not rack mounted.

So I used some bits of wood from an old futon bed that belongs to my ex-girlfriend, she had said not to cut the wood up but I haven't spoken to her for a year and a half so it's tough.

First of all I measured a piece of 19'' rack gear to check where the 19'' is:

The 19'' is from the absolute outside edges including the ears. Make sure you get this in you head now otherwise your rack will be the wrong size and useless to anyone (or everyone, the same thing)

Next I decided that I needed around 30 Us, a 'U' is one space in a rack - the 3630 pictured above is 1U. Some items are  2Us or more. So I imagined making a stand that was two rack frames side by side with some sort of surface or shelf on the top for extra things. In the end this is what I have started to make, it's about 5ft tall:

You can see the 2m long piece of 'rack strip' standing at the left, another is on order. Eventually they will both be cut in half, then the four pieces will be attached to the insides of the lower two sections of the stand which are a tiny bit wider than 19'' across each, this is allow for the gear to fit in easily. It is all held together with small brackets and screws which have a bit of 'play' in them when the screws are loose to get the size just right. My spray paint ran out which is why you can still see the wood in certain places.

I have now added the two top shelves and bought some more paint so it's nearly done, still waiting for the other piece of rack strip to arrive so I can finish it. Here it is with my patch panels in the finished rack side and my mixer...

The top shelf is adjustable for angle.

Go to the 'Project studio' page to see it with all the gear in.

The parts can be bought as follows:
